Hmmm, I wonder why so many people thought of cotton reels - I dont really automatically associate cotton with the number 7 - as for something constructive, I think this image needs a little more oomph... contrast, saturation or just better lighting.

That backround ... well, at least you've used a background, but this: why not use a clean board? Let the decay of the fruit speak for itself, what is added by having that mess on the background? you light seems good too - though I'm not sure that you're quite in control of it - looking at those burnt-out highlights on the left-most thing, and the rim of the bowl.

I like the gritty quality of your subject...nicely contrasted against the ever-new whiteness of the bowl. The background, however, is a distraction to me...the color and definition of the wood keeps pulling my eye away. Perhaps something more neutral would have worked better.
