Ha! Get a new lens with a 1.8 capability and its almost predictable that your first go with it is going to involve that f/1.8 aperture, isn't it? It is a gresat lens, even if I think it's an odd focal length for an APS-sized sensor, but in this instance the shallow DOF hasn't served you well. had there been eye-contact here that extreme would have worked well to isolate that look, but without it you are dependent on the shape and your lighting's moulding of her face for your imapact - and that v shallow DOF has removed a deal of that impact from this image. the primary point fo focis appears to be the end of her nose, which is anunusual choice to say the least.

The light is just lovely though - honest, revealing, not too overtly flattering, and presenting us with na honest, genuine portrait; infinitely preferable to the plasticated nonsense that seems ot have appealed to most voters in this challenge.

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

First Impression - the most important one:
This is lovely, it is a truely candid shot, maybe missing a little, but is still a good human study.

Composition:
This is nice, but only nice, the lack of light on the childs face is an issue, but its a candid and we can not control everything. But perhaps adding a little brightness may have helped. The colours of her outfit really help her to stand out.

Subject:
Meets the challenge with full gusto.

Technical (Colour and light):
The lighting is the issue here, but you are outside and using what nature provided ... good DOF usage, and a well cropped pic with the litttle girl on thirds.

To grow its vote?:
It is not a stuning picture and you will note from the ones that won that they were. Keep practising .. you will get there.

Summary:
You have a great buildd up in your portfolio .. keep shooting.

Wonderful image and nice capture! Only one comment really, the cheek and strands of hair coming down show signs of post processing (slight halo, skin tones look funny). Overall composition is very good. Nice job.
