I had a very similar idea but went with something else. I thinking cleaning the the grit before taking the picture would have helped it a lot

What a wonderful subject, too bad it isn't wider so that it covered the whole frame. Good job on exposure and great DOF. I think it would be betterthough if the small stones were removed from the foreground (nitpick), but it does work. It might also have worked using the 640x427 aspect ratio and set it up framing as a portrait.
