Leaving grain issues aside, the main "shortcoming" of this shot is a lack of "life" in the eyes. Typically on animal face closeups like this a sense of luminosity int he eyes pays big bonus points. Also this image is overall very flat feeling, with little tonal variation even between cat and BG, let alone throughout the cat itself.

Sharpness and DOF are exceptionally nice here. It's all-in-all a very nice image; it just lacks that extra POP that would boost its memorability factor.

What is delicate here? Needs more DOF or focus moved forward so nose is sharp. Glare is annoying.

I liked this shot, animals dont always go down well here (ask me most of my shots are cats and horses!!), the grain is nice but I think it might have had more impact and maybe scored a bit higher if the kitty had been looking at the camera (easier said than done when working with animals I know believe me). I took the liberty of playing with the shot a bit in PS, upped the contrast a fraction, brought down the brightness a smidgen and coverted to greyscale and feel it improved the shot. Give it a try, hope this helps.

I am no expert on grain and couldn't enter or vote on the members challenge but here is my $.02 (probably worth less).

Not sure if there is a big difference between grain and noise (I would think so). I look at the image and I see multi-colored noise, mind you it isn't a lot of colors but I see enough to say it is not just grain and others that voted may have thought the same.

It is a good picture with good detail and lighting, focus and DOF but also doesn't hold my interest for an extended amount of time. I vote higher on images that make me stop and look at the entire picture and really amaze me.

Sorry you didn't do as well as you hoped...this is the story of my life over and over again. :o)

I like your photo. I think the light/glow on the bottom right hand corner may take the focus out of your true subject. (That's my attempt at constructive criticism so I hope that doesn't sound harsh) :)
