I like your choice of subject to attempt this (dodge/burn). The wilted flower petals lends itself well to the overall feel (gloomy) of the image.

Dodge & Burn isn't one of my better areas in PP either. One reason, is I don't like the grainy appearance I get. It looks like it's caused some graininess in your flower image here also.

Good luck. I'm jealous...wish I had some extra time to practice this technique as well. ;^)

Edit - just noticed that your edges look funny next to the border, like there was a 1 pixel white edge that got caught up in the burning?
