Waitingby artvetComment by wewillexplore: Greetings from the Critique Club!
Hi Art!
DPC and "art" don't really belong together. It's a good site to learn some cool stock photography ideas, though. Now ya know, as JPR said.
As far as the image itself, if you're going to clean it up, why not go all the way and clean the rest of the brightest spots? It seems speckled in some places it should not be. The composition and lighting are great and I hope you continue to submit interesting shots.

Whow!!! Reese's under the bed!by artvetComment by artvet: Of course it was staged! Unless you are really lucky or overly optimistic = finding something good in everything, serendipity doesn't happen too often. At least not to me. The idea for this photo was from observing my daughter. She often finds something interesting accidentally under her bed or by the desk. I agree, her expression should be more of delight then shock. Yup, the floor is too clean. It is definitely not her bed. Lighting could be better. I am not sure how to improve it, though - undirected light? Screens?

Are you joking? Do you think that everything except documentary photography is dishonest? My entry is a story described by one picture. It is not a film or a text but it is still a story, and even you figured it out. There is no indication in the description of the theme of this challenge that it has to be documentary. It doesn't matter whether it was staged or not, as long as the theme is shown.
Anyway, it looks like serendipity means something different for everybody. For instance, for me, a calving cow is not serendipity, maybe because being a vet I take it as a predictable beauty of nature.
Cheers

Whow!!! Reese's under the bed!by artvetComment by melismatica: I'm not sure what's going on here. My initial response was, "Huh?". Once I understood the idea that she is looking under the bed for a book (I think) and has found an old box of candy my next thought was it is so obviously staged that it just doesn't count. By my way of thinking, one can't stage a serendipidous event. This is a very dishonest photo. |

Waitingby artvetComment by artvet: This was my first entry a the DPChallange, so I read the requirements of Advance Editing and the description of the theme (...take a photo that has a silhouette as part of your composition) My original shot is below.
I underexposed it to pull out more of the silhouette of the dogs muzzle, chest and front leg, then corrected the contrast, added a little bit texture and cropped it. Did I change it a lot? I chose this shot because I liked the composition created by the dog's body and its shadow. I like the paint texture I created. In my opinion it gives softer and more artistic sensation. I was pretty disappointed at the beginning with the low score, but after reading some discussions on the forums I realized that my definition of photography was much broader then generally accepted on DPChallenge. I understand that some people don't like dogs or effects applied, but discussion about integrity of the photograph is valid only if one can see the original picture, otherwise it is only gossip. My judgment of a photograph, at first is based on the emotions I feel are being portrayed, then I analyze the composition, color and technical characteristics of the work. Additionally, if it is a contest on a particular topic, like on the DPChallenge, it is important to adhere to the subject.
So far I have enjoyed the site a lot. Thank you for taking your time to read this and for all your comments. I hope to learn a lot here.
Cheers,
Art

My street at night in Aprilby artvetComment by jodiecoston: The top lights that form stars are of interest, but the bottom splotch of overexposure just makes me feel like I'm being blinded. If it weren't for that, this would be a fantastic shot. |
