An awesome photography. One of the prettiest ones I've seen on DPC. I hope you've collected well from this photo. Beautiful!

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I think that the feedback is all valid.

I think that overall I fell into the trap of trying to re-create a shot that I captured of this scene earlier in the year. I pass this on my commute and in Winter this coincides with sun-rise so the light is more striking.

The composition is too busy and the scene has an overall 'muddy' feel...

Examples from dawn to illustrate my point... not perfect but better candidates with better separation of the boat and bridge (or isolating the bridge completely)

Thanks

Chris

I think either of these would have fared better, especially the isolated bridge. The issue with the entry is not only the comp, but the b/w conversion.

This is much stronger and the best of the three you give us for comparison (entry +2) IMO.

Hi Chris, welcome back. I see smog, a haze that softens the edges & surfaces. Soft light. It looks incidental & if this was my comp I would've tried to make it the subject somehow. Or, tried a polarizing filter when shooting to minimize it. The Tower Bridge is an icon, of course. This means your shot is competing with many others in my memory. Not to mention all the other famous bridges in my memory. To get a higher score, this has to make my mind linger longer, past the moment of recognition to the moment of discovery. Just my opinion, of course. Keep on clickin' Chris!

Hi Chris
this is a fairly nice shot but not a picture above average.
The bridge - which is supposed to be the main object has too many "opponents" rivaling for the viewers eye. If it was my shot I would have tried a crop on the left side - the bridge doesn't to be in the centre.
The whole picture seems to be kind of hazy and washed out, maybe a little more contrast would have changed it for the better.
Your idea of leaving it in colour is hard to be evaluated since we don't know how clear or greyish the water and the sky would have been.
I hope this gives you a hint on what might be the reason for average votes imho

I gave you a 5. I think it's OK for a silhouette, but there's too many things going on in this image. Where do you want me to focus on: the ship(s), the bridge, building to the right? And the background is quite distracting as well, cranes everywhere. Hope this will help. Cheers

To me this is more of a mural, but the colors are good and the art work is pretty neat.
