Actually snails are hermaphrodites - all are both male and female, they mate using a "harpoon" on a cord which goes into the other snail's side through the skin - OUCH!

Both snails send the harpoons and both lay eggs. I was lucky enough to see it once in my front garden....

Love the photo, it expresses the concept in a very humourous way and funnily enough better than a true life shot of snails mating would have.
