I don't feel I have the photographical experience to comment on the composition, but a bit of post processing could have made the picture come more to life. Specifically, more contrast would lift the haze that seems to be on it. One thing I did notice though, is that it seems like the picture is tilted (all the lines, both in the fence and on the pump point to the upper right), rotating it so that the lines point straight up could (perhaps) work better.

This is a very contrast-free image, which can sometimes be nice effect, but does not work here. I can hardly tell what I'm looking at because the colors of the pump blend in with the background. Also, there is no reason for so much of the composition to be in focus. If you'd have walked 10 feet closer to the pump and composed the rusty iron plates in the foreground with the sky or trees in the background, you might have had something. Next time, avoid shooting into the sun to minimze the lens flare, which is why your image is so washed out (or cover your lens with a lens hood or your hand).

very flat. looks like you were shooting with the sun in your lens. maybe try to shade the lens, shoot at a different time of day, or try a different angle.
