Board gaming is awesomeby JuliusSartComment by sidpixel: Hello from the critique club
An unusual image that contributes to the open challenge
Welcome to DPC! Your entry is commendable for its uniqueness but their are some technical problems with it. The lighting is too severe causing dense hard shadows that obscure what is probably interesting detail on the board. I think you probably missed a great opportunity to take a very different image from eye level with the die excluding the left where the dark shadows are concentrating more on the shapes and translucent effects the lighting has on the dice themselvesâ€Â¦? |

Defenderby JuliusSartComment by JuliusSart: Thank you all for your comments. I recognized that the goose is out of focus and that its not dominating image enough. The "plan" was to have the fierce goose cover half or more of the image and that the DOF would be much shallower. When planning this shot i didn't take into account the fear factor and the fact that had to get so close with the selected lens. I had couple better images in that session but since this was closest to the idea i had, and i took the nasty tumble when taking this, i thought that it would be fitting to submit this one.
How could i have captured the focus better or is this just too ambitious of a plan? Or should the depth just be wide? Obviously next time i'll rather take the hit from the goose than the rocks. Or wear a helmet :) |

An appealing image that meets the challenge well.
The composition is good with the goose obviously the main subject in a pleasing scene. What lets it down is that the focus point is actually behind the goose and given the challenge it is essential that it it should be in focus. I think you may well have had it in focus initially but in advancing towards you the focus has remained where it was, rendering the goose out of focus. Its a shame because this has probably impacted upon the end result but it remains an interesting entry, thanks Julius. |

Defenderby JuliusSartComment by ubique: I tried to decide if I liked this or not. Liked won in the end. It's a weird wildlife picture but that's a positive as far as I'm concerned. It's quite an interesting photograph, without regard to the challenge topic, and the rascally duck or goose is just a lovely whacky inclusion that prevents it from being a static yawn-inducing landscape. So what all that amounts to is that I like all the things the picture isn't. Very much. Thank you. |
