perhaps using a more contrasting background would have made the carrot stand out more and appear crisper (no pun intended! :) around the edges.

This is an example of photography 101 ignored. If you are going to ignore all the rules, you better have a good reason. First, don't center the subject in the frame. Second, light the subject properly to create a mood or to express an emotion. Third, well, don't photograph sweaty carrots made of icing and call it art...cuz it ain't.

Stark, simple, beautiful. Would probably have more interest if it were offcenter and maybe arranged in a diagonal fashion. But still, it is a very well thought of entry to the challenge.
