Hello from the Critique club..

First of all I enjoyed the pic. This was perfect for this challenge and I think your score reflects this. I think the antique feel of this fits the subject perfectly. To me it appears that the sun was slightly harsh on this day. There are a couple white washed areas that can be slightly distracting. On this shot that is not a big problem for me. The detail (wood grain, bushes, etc.) is also very nice. I think you did a good job with it. Happy shooting.

Ahhhhh. Magnificent. Just the kind of image I enjoy. Love the way you've processed the eye! Top shot of the challenge so far.

Edit: in a challenge where I gave one of my lowest average scores ever, this image stood out head and shoulders above all the others. A well-deserved 9!

Good Day from the critique club

I understand that you are not into still life shots as mentioned in your comments. However, I really think that you did a very nice job. The composition was nicely done. The choice of material (props) used was perfect for a black and white in my opinion. However I think I would have wanted the clock more centered in the frame. To me it is only slightly distracting.

The wood grain in this shot is awesome. I love the way it almost pops out at you. It gives depth, which is always a good thing.

I hope this critique has helped. Keep it up.

colors and saturation: color appear over saturated

focus and depth of field: image is in focus

overall: noisy and over sharpened as seen on the right edge of the pepper. the image is just a close crop of a stem of a pepper. the perspective and composition doesn't really add any appeal to an otherwise uninteresting subject.

Color Saturation and Hue: Colors are realistic

Brightness and contrast: image is mostly well lit, the lights on the croissant are a bit hot.

Focus and depth of field: clean and sharp

nice clean sharp image, the crop could be adjusted to center the plate perfectly inside the border.its a nice setup up against a nice backdrop.

i'm not fond of this image, the subjects seem awkward and they lack that "cuteness" one expects from this moment. its not like you can pose them, though :)

the colors and details all seem to blend together and the background bleeds into the subject so there is isn't enough isolation of the subject to any appeal either.

Critique Club Review:

Color Saturation and Hue - Not applicable

Brightness and Contrast - highlights and shadows are both well controlled to preserve detail.

Focus and Depth of Field - focus is sharp and depth of field is excellent, but processing gives the impression that the image is a little soft.

Lighting - scene is well lit, and lighting angle brings out the shapes well.

Subjective - I think a couple of things may have hurt your score.
1. HDR is a risk these days. When it was new, it scored highly. Now, the voters are used to seeing it, and it can make an image look "artificial" as noted below, or odd.
2. There does not seem to be a place for the eye to come to rest. I love to explore an image, but those with an end point seem to do better. What are you trying to show me? A shallow depth of field, would have helped focus on the foreground machinery. If you wanted to show me everything, you did, but at the cost of putting some of yourself into the message.

Summary - I like the image. It is a little above average. so the score is in the ball park for me. I would like to see this redone where the background is a soft blur of shapes. Force my attention to the one full piece of equipment, with the glorious pipes and must and bolts, and I'm sold!

Wellâ€Â¦. I expected this to do wayyy better than this, way under scored, my monitor shows great full detail of the trees all the way to the left. You still have a great eye and an awesome shot here, terrific crop! keep up the great work. perhaps some monitors need calibration?

can i ask why you shot f/10?

at that distance you dont need the DOF of f10, you could have open up and gotten a cleaner sky that shooting at ISO 4000.

composition wise its nice, just enough negative space on the right and top. nicely captured too with no blurring of the planes.
