Comment by Melethia:
I remember shooting from the floor of the church, possibly with Sara, in either York or Rome. Main reason I shot from the floor was to accommodate for the slow shutter speed! (Most churches frown on tripods.) This is quite lovely. Very peaceful.

Hello from the critique club

An image that does not meet the challenge

Sorry Marcel this one doesn̢۪t work for me. I have to agree with one of your commenters, there needs to be a sense of placement where this part of a larger scene such as wall mural with additional street scene if that is indeed the case. It actually feels like some bizarre PS filters have been used to transform a normal image which is a long way from my interpretation of the challenge theme.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Haha wouldn't you know it, haven't written a crit for weeks and the first one I get is one of yours, Marcel! And congrats on making me do my homework and see what appears to constitute Wabi Sabi. Very spare and minimalistic treatment of everyday objects, as they are found and not staged, seems to be the way to go. So let's take a look.

First off I personally love the way the bars and areas of light and the design on the cutting board/table(?) play across the objects in the picture, whose tones and visual size/tones all complement each other beautifully. The objects in the pic are separated by a generous amount of white space. And hey, look around, you even beat out Neat...she usually does very well in challenges like this! Technically this is an excellent shot.

However, from what I've seen of the Wabi Sabi entries who beat you, I think you may have tried a little too hard...there is a definite sense of staging the shot here, and as Wabi Sabi seems to favour minimalism and simple treatment of everyday objects, as they are found...the comp in your entry is almost too perfect! Perhaps a slight bit of mess, maybe taken after the tea was made with some loose matcha powder on the board etc. But an excellent effort anyway and you should be proud of where you placed. Very good work, keep it up! :-)

I do not see how this is Graffiti. There is no indication what it is painted on to show that it is not a canvas or mural on a wall.

Greetings from the Critique Club!
I love that you went to a home improvement store to help you with this challenge. I definitely wouldn't have thought of that one. The umbrella is definitely a colorful subject and the range of shades represented is terrific. Clearly a fit for this challenge. The off center composition is wonderful; and the supports create nice leading lines to highlight each segment. Two things that detract at least for me ... 1) the out of focus know in the bottom right clutters up the clarity of the lines and segments; and 2) the vibrancy of the colors feels a bit off. I like the shine and textures of the color segments but there's just a touch of "oompf" (horrible technical term - but I don't know how to describe it) that would kick it up a notch. That being said, this is nicely executed. I may have to visit a hardware store.

this is so lovely! I rated it much higher than the average and can't believe it ended up behind my own entry...
Maybe it was too perfect and not enough Wabi Sabi?
