Thanks for the comments. I think people were very generous with their votes on this shot. Once I entered it I was very unhappy with it. I'd set up a workbench and tools still life with an orange cord and light and soon got caried away with the shapes of the plastic on the light rather than the photo as a whole. I agree that it's sort of empty. Thanks for the 'high' marks anyway.

I like this idea but the results are not as promising as the idea. the bulb looks slightly fuzzy and for this to work it has to be sharp as glass. While I like leaving all that backround in black, I wish there was more room at the top, about as much as you left on the sides.

This photo meets the challenge without any problems. I think what it is lacking is simple subjective appeal. I can't really offer you much on the lines of technical or compositional advice with this one. Subjective appeal is something you will learn over time and your subject choices will improve with experience :)
