Hmm... I wouldn't have given the blurred spot a second thought. I couldn't go much smaller on the aperture without a tripod, so the shallow DOF was a given. The background did bother me, though. I took a shot at changing the background color (purple was very nice), but I didn't have time to mask everything off properly and do it right, so I abandoned the idea. Obviously, I didn't have time for that little experiment either. ;-)

The contrasting colors are marvelous. Great detail on the butterfly and I'd have to agree that the blurred spot is the biggest drawback. That said, the rest of the photo is wonderful so it isn't a huge distraction. I don't think the background really does anything for the image, perhaps the dull color gives the dynamic of the wings more contrast, but seeing as you couldn't exactly set up for this photo, it wasn't really in your power to change it so the point is kind of moot, no?

this is a great subject...you have captured the colors details and texture beautifully...the only imperfection i can point out is the spot on the lower portion of the wing that it is blurred...the cropping is perfect to show off the butterfly and the brightness of the plant it is on gives a wonderful cdontrast to his deep colors
