Seems more like a candid snap than a portrait. I guess technically it's a portrait, but the subject's head is actually a very small portion of the total image and not well lit at that. Hard to get much from what's here...

this may sound presumptuous (apologies if it does) but this is exactly how my images look straight out of my Rebel. Generally they come out a bit soft, and a bit flat. If it were mine, I'd use both curves and unsharp mask to really bring my subject into light. That's a preference thing, and presumably just my taste - but it's what I'd do. Either way, this is a really fun portrait.
