Turning My Heart Upside Downby PangurbanComment by Catherine_B: A pretty window garden that is artificially framed by the iron work. This has potential and I think would be better if the upper corners of the image were blacked out or more opaque. The way it is now the iron really distracts from the flowers which are the main subject. |

The Pen is Mightier Than the Swordby PangurbanComment by levyj413: I feel caught between two different ways I'd prefer this: a wider view showing me something about the paper and a tighter macro, probably with a different angle on the lighting to bring out the interesting shapes and depth of the ridges and bumps. |

Arum Snailby PangurbanComment by SaraR: Yay, you broke the 5! I was one of your 5 voters.
Pros: the bokeh is good, shows the subject off to good effect, and is definitely aesthetically pleasing. The shell is shown to good effect. I like the way the plant is angled so that the bottom is away from the lens and consequently out of focus.
Cons: the snail is out of focus - f3.2 was too wide an aperture, you probably needed around f8, and at at least f5.6. This was quite a big issue for me. Compositionally, the subject is leaning to the left, it just looks a tad unbalanced.
Summary - biggest problem is the ultra shallow dof. |

Angelicby PangurbanComment by posthumous: surprised to see this get a brown. I guess the voters are keen to punish "blown highlights" even though they work well for this photo.
then again, it's a high scoring challenge. 4.9 isn't usually a brown. |
