Scionsby jenesisComment by Ivo: Excellent, colorful, creative, fresh, unusual and just plain fun to look at. I'm bumping this up to a 7. Good luck! |

Scionsby jenesisComment by dipaulk: The colors are beautiful! And I love a shallow DOF. I haven't seen them do well on DPC, tho. Wonderful composition. 8 |

Scionsby jenesisComment by leesc: The colors are brilliant, but the fuzzy focus is very distracting. |

Scionsby jenesisComment by whagerbaumer: This is a nice macro. It does stretch the terms outside and inside somewhat as I would not describe the position where the camera is as outsitde the flower in normal conversation. A 6. |

Scionsby jenesisComment by 2Shay: Very brilliant colors. I like the sharpness of focus on the stamen, but wish the flower were just a bit clearer as well. |

Tulip IIby jenesisComment by Neil: Jennifer, since you didn't pick what you want me to critique, I'll pick some!
This shot attracted me immediately. The simplicity and simple range of colors gives it a great gestalt (overall feel). Now to look at it in more detail, and perhaps nit pick a little, in a constructive way. Here's how I often break down my more thoughtful critiques:
Hits: The simple colors and layout give this a fine art feel. Yet, despite the few colors, there's a nice range of colors in the flowers themselves. The petals are given a painterly texture by the subtle gradations of violet. The transition to the high intensity background happens quite smoothly and naturally.
Misses. The only significant issue to me is the main forground leaf (the pointy one) on the right -- I would have liked to see it more in focus (I played with it a bit in Bibble, and that area does sharpen up nicely). Also, it's possible that a bit more contrast on the greens might have added further compliment to the colors of the tulip. You might want to play with the channels/curves a bit and bring up the contrast just a hair in that area. Lastly, I think a crop on the left and a little bit on the top to eliminate just a little of the negative space and put the top right center of the leftmost flower in the sweet spot, brings more emphasis to the beauty of the subject. (I tried the crop here; if I get a chance later, I'll post it here, so you can more easily see what I mean.)
These are all just thoughts from a second "eye" for your consideration. Overall, it's quite a beautiful and attractive photo.
Regards--Neil |

New York Skylineby jenesisComment by jenesis: Hmmm, time of day was probably around 4:00pm-ish. We just missed the last boat to the island so we just ended up taking the harbour cruise, this was taken from the boat, Ferry... whatever. Very grey and overcast day. But the sun did peek out here and there. My Ground Zero (free Study) shot was taken a little later the same day and you can see the sunset in it.
As far as treatment, don't remember all the steps but obviously converted to B&W (can't remember if it was via channel mixer or greyscale>quadtone) and I know I used the high pass filter and a little USM as well. With curves and levels as needed, cropped and darkened the edges a bit. Probably not very helpful... I really need to get better at keeping track of my steps. :-) Thanks for taking a peek!
Now tell me, why do you have a piggytailed Icon?!? :-P Message edited by author 2005-04-28 14:52:14. |
