Myalup magicby PhilthyComment by Philthy: For my first entry in 3 yrs I'm very happy with my first 6.Must confess though that in my haste to enter I got an F in geography. The location was actually Meelup which is in Dunsborough(West Aus),not Myalup. That's embarrassing. Lights on the horizon are actually from Busselton up the coast a bit, not lightning.Extremely wet weekend but thought I'd head out to see if I could get anything. Glad I did! |

Myalup magicby PhilthyComment by tanguera: I love the softness of these colors. Enchanting. And are those lightning strikes on the horizon...? |

This is a cute candid and could have done better with a little more work. And no I don't mean in PS sense, and there you did a good job of simply removing a few odds and ends and not drastic changes to the image
However...first off, she's facing into the sun and squinting, so her lovely eyes are in shadow and there are areas of strong glare on the nose and cheekbones. Similarily the shadowed background behind her head splits it in half and detracts from her. The oof hand doesn't bother me as it gives a sense of depth and place. I understand that it's hard to capture children when they decide to be cooperative, which may not be for long. But a lower ISO and much faster shutter could have helped to reduce the amount of glare and shadows, and those in turn could have been taken down a bit by something as simple as covering up the light source (a window, I'm guessing) with a white sheet or similar translucent item, to soften and diffuse the light a bit.
Overall not a bad attempt and she looks like a delightful subject. Watch your light and settings a bit more closely and above all, experiment. Practice does make perfect.
Keep on shooting and entering!

Bellaby PhilthyComment by 3DsArcher: I am surprised to see this one finish where it did & not a single comment during the challenge. I thought it was a wonderful candid moment. |

I cant 't believe she left.by PhilthyComment by snaffles: Greetings from the Critique Club!
This would have got a 6-7 from me in voting. It's a very strong shot, showing just enough to get the point across without being overdone. I do side with those that suggest clearing up the counters in the future, it's too easy to forget about clutter in the bg! It's often tiny things like that, esp in a challenge about isolation, that hold voters back from giving a stronger vote. You may have been able to clone some items out, but imho it's best to get the shot in-camera than rely on pp later.
The backlighting is great, I like the POV and the use of the floor tiles to lead to the desolate figure. You could have gone for an even longer exposure as you were using a tripod and remote or timer to get the shot. B/W might have also worked well and added to the sense of desolation.
And you finished just below a 6, which is very respectable, so don't be too hard on yourself! If you can, mess around with the setup a little more and reshoot. Try opening the door a little more, play with your position, etc and see what shakes out :-)
