I just took a look at the tools competition, and my impression is that many of the tools in the top twenty or thirty are competently and prettily photographed but lack 'soul.' They lack some context that connects them with human activity - curiously, even some of the ones that are in use. But this photo somehow evokes that activity. I expect it is patina of rust on the wrench and the work surface on which it lies. It is also the mixture of blue and orange light that one might find in one of those old industrial buildings built in the early twentieth century with lines and lines of rooftop windows facing north..

I am interested in how it works. The focal plane is near the bottom of the photo, but this works because the lines of the out-of focus-handle lead us there. I love it.

Very effective self-portrait, it really draws the viewers view right onto you. Simple composition with excellent use of negative space and it adds to the over all mood. Nice work!
