You could have focused on it by just cropping out about 1/5 on the right, as well as the first pole on the left, to get a square image, going well with this portrait.  DOF works well in the background. Nice soft colors but nose a bit overexposed in the whites. |

I really like the depth of field you're using in this shot, I just wish the fence didn't run behind the horses head.  I feel that a slightly higher angle would help frame the top of the image with the fence, while adding much more depth/interest to the image.  In addition to that, I feel the image is too tightly cropped from top to bottom.
