Overall, a good idea. I would like to mention some things that could make this a better photo:
* Seems like you may have used on camera flash. Notice how that gives very harsh shadows and flattens out the image? Try finding a way to light the scene without that.
* There is some sort of shadow in the bottom/middle of the photograph which is very distracting. Watch out for unwanted shadows and highlights.
* The pen while nicely angled, is simply clutter in my eyes. I think I would remove it or replace it with a fancier pen.

Your choice of lighting hurts this shot quite a bit, I'm afraid. Experiment with bouncing flash off a ceiling, or diffusing it in other ways.

I like how the colors complement one another. The blue from the mug matching the text in the paper and the biscuits matching the mug.

Nice use of curves to add a dynamic element to the scene. I think I would have chosen to mess around with the white balance until this became more "day" like, but that's just personal preference.
