Greetings from the Critique Club

Hi Jason,

I agree with Enzo (hotpasta) below that this image does have a zen quality through it's simplicity. Not sure if all the voters agreed, but you don't seem to have bene too badly hit by the DNMC challenge crowd.

Regarding composition. Is it as I have said nice and simple. I think you would have done well to further simplify it by removing the OOF twig in the background, or at least making sure that it did not overlap with the thorns. Unfortunately this prevents the thorns from standing out in crisp focus, and really drawing the eye in. The background is not the best choice (as you yourself have indicated). I think a simple shot like this calls for a simple background, probably either black or white.

Regarding technical details. These are very good. Personally I would have liked to see a great depth of focus with more of the lower left twig in focus. The thorns and water-droplets definitely should 'pop' out in focus and contrast - which I don't think they do (although this may be a factor of the background).

I hope my comments help and Good Luck in future Challenges!

Cheers
Paul

The DoF is good. I'm too sure about the bg green though, feels a bit sickly (just my opinion, mind, I think a desat may have lifted it somewhat) and the thorns lend an overall sense of threat, rather than Zen, to the image.

The DOF in the lower left is off putting, I think because you can also see the end of the stick and to me this image doesn't say Zen (MHO)

Jason, thanks for the comment on my beach entry I thought I would return the comment. This entry is reall cool and I like the way you took every day objects and made an interesting photo out of it. The colors are great and I like how you used different color light sources to do it. Great job, thanks again for the comment and congrats on the high finish in the challenge.

so cute! I think the desaturation of everything but the butterfly is great, makes it more special than other baby photos.

Hi Jason. I got visions of Homer Simpson and the nuclear plant when I first saw this. As Shutterpug said, looks very biohazardous.

This was a great idea to attempt to capture. I find it hard to locate the main point of focus though. The front popcicles look soft. I would of tried a different DOF to try and get a larger focal area.

With the framing that you have used it looks like the popcicle on the right is very out of place as it doesn't seem to line up well with the others. It just seems to be sitting off to the side, if you know what I mean. Perhaps you could of cropped it out of the frame altogether?

You seemed to get a mixed response from your comments about the border. I'm a big border fan so it doesn't distract me at all.

All up I just don't think it really clicked with a lot of the voters but it ended up with a nice even spread of votes. Well done and good effort. Best of luck in future challenges.

Neil
