Hmm, you want to know my secret locations ;)
Seeing the aurora is easy, (if it shows up) just get out of the city until you get dark sky and wait.
But for some real hunting and shooting, monitor the weather forecast, the aurora forecast, check what others are doing to get locations ideas.
Pick your spots in daylight, come again at night and wait wait wait :)
kleifarvatn, Þingvellir, Mosfellsheiði, Hvalfjörður are few names near Reykjavik to look up on the map.
Or if you got the cash just hire a local guide on a 4x4 to take you anywhere you want.
