Well the image definitely pops and the colors and sharpness are spot on. Just have the bird look at you and you would have had a 6+ photo in my opinion. However, as is this is a highly technical shot and you should be applauded. Nice post work too.

The focus on this is just fine to me as are the colors, but I have one big problem with it, there is no face. Without the face, there is really nothing key to focus on. Not being a wildlife photographer, I have no idea what this bird is doing, or why it's in such an awkward position. If it's face was in the shot, I'd like it much better. Also, the stick right underneath the bird is distracting to me.

I gave this a 6. The colours are great, nice DOF, my only gripe is it's face. You were unlucky not to catch it in shot.

The tonal range used on the bird is a little dull. The gravel is where the brightest white can be found and would be better placed on the chest feathers instead.

I didn't see what you saw, but I did see a bird that seemed rather shy, trying to hide from you but still peeking out to see what you're up to. I thought it kinda sweet. I just looked at your score - definitely better than that. DPC voters have become a rather harsh lot!
