I have scored this a 5. There are a couple of reasons for this:

1) This is a Memoir challenge, and a memoir is autobiographical in nature. So this must mean that the photographer has died, but in fact you posted this image. That un-realism means a lot in this challenge (at least to me).

2) This evokes empathy, but not real sadness for me. While I feel their pain, I'm not feeling my own pain.

3) There are some technical flaws. For instance, the candles have no detail and there is a lot of noise in the dark areas.

I hope this helps you understand my thinking (and possibly the thinking of other voters.

This is really nice portrait. It would be hard to do much advanced editing on it without losing the great natural feel of the image. Nice job -- I hope you are getting some good feedback at the camp.
