Nice catch of nature but the blue tint across the face makes the shot too cool. I think it would be better if warmed up a bit..

I'd flip this so the subject would be facing the other way so when my eyes come in from the left of the photo I wouldn't come into the back of her head. Good composition with subject not dead center (good rule of thirds). Clothing is very distracting... would have preferred a solid color dress with all the spots of color around the photo from the flowers. Lighting is a bit harsh on the arms and face making subject look "bigger" which the patterned dress also does.

Sweet. If you play around with angles more, you an get really interesting shots with the light pastel girl and flowers framed by the darker tree background.

The lighting is a little flat, it looks like a nice location to try shooting in the evening or maybe in the rain.

Truly one of the few that truly depicts a sense and isn't a shoe horn.

I definitely give you credit for telling a story vs. many of the other entries. But the concept "memoir" to me means something about yourself, not just any story.

As for the image, I agree with James that it seems more like an experiment that a sad moment. I don't mind the color - firelight's very warm.

But the lack of emotion means I'm not especially drawn in.

narrative: 10

I gave this an 8 overall. I think the narrative drives it, but there seems to be some technical (or rather aesthetic) issues that lower the image overall. Initially I thought this was a very sharp snapshot, and it wasn't until I took a bit more time with it that I realized it wasn't. I think it looks this way because of the color cast of the candles -not used to 'non-white' light, but also because of the cropping of one of the main subjects (my biggest irk). I know this is out of your control, but one of the things I noticed between the relationship of the title and image is that the boys don't necessarily appear to be mourning/sad, and depending on how the viewer chooses to read into it, they both have faces that almost seem to express curiosity.

hope it helps!
