Both versions are great but I like the B&W version better because it seems to emphasize the girls more. Symmetry is excellent, and foot-to-foot posture adds to their expressions.

I agree that cropping would better emphasize her and her cuteness. But I would probably opt for a more traditional portrait structure with the cropping -- thus put her closer to center than what jutilda suggested. But then again, what do I know about portraits compare with her.

my choice is the B&W but I just like B&W lol. From a purely personal point of view I'd remove the picture and lights as I think they detract from the main subject.
I've been a bit heavy handed in this edit but I was thinking something like this

The washed out area of the paper actually helps to focus the viewer's eye on your son's face and his expression. I really like it!
