I think hbunch has my interpretation most correct -- this is a "negative" space in the societal as well as photographic context. Those tetherballs are surrounded by a space which should be filled with kids -- since I shot it right in the middle of the school day it's amazing I got a shot with no one in it except someone way off in the distant trees. I darkened the overall look to make it more depressing-looking; maybe a brightly-lit daytime scene with no kids would be better?
