Very beautiful shot! The shallow DOF works very well to draw my attention to the central subject; I also like the almost pink hue imparted to the entire shot (intentionally or not). Well done!

I like the color and DOF in this photo. This looks like the kind of result I get when I use my 50mm f/1.8 lens wide open. The out of focus areas are nice and smooth which is very pleasing to the eye. I am not thrilled, however, by the dark area on the bottom right side of the photo. It might work if you just cropped it out along with the OOF area on the top of the photo. I think the subject is a little too centered for my taste. You might run a light USM over this one to sharpen it up a little more. I think this is a good effort and I gave it a 6.

This is the shot I wish I could have gotten. Great colour, with just enough in and out of focus.

GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB!

INITIAL THOUGHTS...Ahh Fredricksburg!! I live in Montreal Canada but work brings me, when I do get to travel, usually to the small town of Fredricksburg (or Waldorf, one of the two :) Nice to see it on DPC :)

COMPOSITION... I like the placement of the car, the road, and the angle chosen to take the shot. gives a nice view of the town... but overall the composition could have been a little stronger - just mainly because the scene is a little cluttered, nothing that really draws the eye in, and the sky's a little washed out. Would be nice with some nice blue water as well, but I think the number of rivers in the US, or even North America, that are clear and blue are quite few. To improve the composition? I'm not really sure, I'd have to check out the landscape to see if there was a better viewpoint, but perhaps one that had a flatter terrain with a view of the town in the background... I think when I mentioned the scene being cluttered, I seem to think its the trees, or placement of the trees that's causing this feeling. I imagine the scene with the trees not included and it already feels better.

TECHNIQUE... The image is well exposed, and of good quality. I would have set for even a faster shutter to make sure the car was completely sharp. A little afternoon light might have given the photo some extra punch as well.

Black Heat

Comment by mbardeen:
Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impressions:
Busy. a bit out of focus, doesn't really capture my eye.

Challenge:
Meets the challenge perfectly

Composition:
The labels show nice details, but I would have prefered to either see more of all the bottles or just one bottle alone. The top and bottom being cut off the Black heat label is slightly annoying to me as well. The colors, on the other hand, are fantastic. They are well saturated and the contrasts make them zing.

Technical:
It seems slightly blury to me, perhaps too shallow a DOF?

Processing:
Nothing glaring in the post processing of the photo.

Overall:
Nice colors, good visual impact, though I would have liked to see more..

IMO, the blue car distracts the wide landscape. Some might disagree with me.
