This is adorable. I feel the sheer temporary nature of his tears.

Tubes, one version of the poor person's macro. I personally use reversed lenses. best bet, at least from my exp. (notwithstanding my abyssmal rating in regard to the DPC) is NOT to use a tripod out in the field unless you can get your subject to move or move your camera as if on rails toward the subject. off-camera flash would be the key in that case.

Well you certainly captured sadness - though I truly hope it was a spur of the moment seen & captured rather than a created 'forced' one taken for the sake of challenge. The reaction I get is the need to comfort this little crying boy. The photo strengths is that the child is showing genuine emotion - those are real tears welling up in the eyes and rolling down the cheeks. The picture has good focus and good lighting. My critique on the photo is that I think the presentation could be stronger if it was in B&W. The color version calls too much attention to the shirt and the off white tones of the wall - why that would be important is because the tones don't allow the main subject to visually "pop" off of the backdrop. A B&W with good dynamic tones in shadows and highlights will keep the attention focused on the main subject without color being a distraction. (not voting)

Comment by Socom:
I really like this shot, I just wish you had washed off the strawberry after each shot (making an assumption that this is why its not all red and not because of the splash), I would have loved to have seen a bright red strawberry. Either way.. nice!

Greetings from the Critique Club! You asked for an in-depth critique of your image and here we go:

I like your choice of subject - something so recognizably red in B&W. The lighting is also pretty good.

There are a few challenges, which are reflected in your score:

Edward Weston uses deep depth of field in his images, so everything is in the same amount of focus. In your photo, you used a shallow depth of field, so only a part of the strawberry is in focus. Your 18-55mm might have worked better for this particular shot.

The crop is very tight - it doesn't give the viewer any room to approach the subject. Stepping back from the berry would have helped create a sense of dimension. With the tight crop, the image appears fairly flat.

The cloth upon which the berry sits is so nice and sharp that it brings attention to it, and it competes with the structure of the berry. A untextured cloth might have worked better here. Also, correcting some of the things mentioned above would have eliminated focus on anything other than the subject itself.

I hope this is useful to you!

Best wishes,

Alicia
