I read this book 50 years ago, and at first I didn't remember that controlled births were a part of it. Now having researched Huxley and his attitudes, I see how this could fit. The image has the uncomfortable feel of a botched abortion, or in this case, the one that got away. Quite disturbing, as I understand Huxley felt about America. So, assuming it was your intention to graphically illustrate a grotesque form of birth control, it succeeds. The white environment has an anticeptic look whe the ketchup serves well enough. But the overall effect is too blunt and two dimensional in the context of the sophistication of the book. 5

Whew. What to say? Not a novel but a short story. The image itself seems to be shot as found, which is ok, but doesn't have much else to say. 4

Appealing horse portrait which could be ripped from the book. The color palette is a little bland but has an attractive faded quality of an old image. Very well composed with carefully discriminating focus centered on the eye as it must be. 8

Marathon Man

I regret to say that this doesn't qualify as inspiration from the novel. It's a good action shot of runners however. The color and tonal range is visually appealing and conveys the spirit of a track meet. But not the novel. 5

Grin. Effectively produced fishtank inspiration. There's the plastic squid and something like the underwater suit of Cape Nemo. And then there's the bored silver dollar fish in the background. There's something brilliant at work here. 7

At least this image comes close to a representing the location of the novel, in the mountains of Davos, Switzerland. It might be better to have related it to the story but we can't have everything. The image is otherworldly to most of us who can never experience first hand such a scene. The incredible beauty is very wall captured and would rate a 10 if quality were the only criteria. But as a visual representation inspired by the novel, not the title of the novel, it rates an 8.

This is a studious attempt at showing the grueling horror of torture more literally described in the novel. Clawing clouds of light and dark conjure up the horrific atmosphere of the story. The image itself is well constructed to that end with exaggerated contrast and textures extending the visual impression to harsh extremes. 7

The man remanded: "Stop begging, comrade. Here is your banquet in a paper bag but first you must pay." I like this projection of there and then on here and now. A convincing link to the novel. I love the composition - dominated by the lines, angles and planes of the building which carom around the picture plane - even as it surrounds and compresses the individual (as in Communist society). This is one of the few in this challenge which make an intuitively inspired connection to the novel. 9

Go tell it to the mountain ~ James Baldwin

Such an ethereally beautiful alpine landscape has nothing to do with the book and like many others in this challenge, it misses the topic by a wide margin. James Baldwin's book was a widely admired milestone in the awakening of the horrors of racism in America. This image is the antithesis of the book. Still a beautiful shot whose photographic quality saves it from the lowest rating. 4

Effective visualization of the novel. The expression on the boys face, combined with the shadows and forms of the environment have the nightmare quality of the book as I remember it. Very well done. 9
