A nicely done landscape, but bears little semblance to the challenge. Even an attempt at depicting the "old urban" is tenuous at best, having no evidence of ranching/farming/mining. The road is the only evidence of human alteration, a much needed element in any urban shot for me. I would have scored this well in a FS though, I am fond of the photo itself.

I imagine this was a tricky thing to shoot. Visually, I don't know how much I like how prominently the building on the right factors into things, but I know if you got much closer to the subject it would lose a lot of sense of what it was.

I'm sorta amazed this scored as high as it did. I don't mean that pejoratively, though it comes off that way. It just doesn't strike me as something that would score decently in a FS, is all- a neutral statement.

I very much like this. It's got a very nice degree of detail mixed in with the movement. The sculpting of the red, in particular, is really pretty awesome, making it seemingly three dimensional. Very cool.

Good capture Joe! Birds are a beast even with a telephoto, let alone a P&S. Make sure to check your histogram to make sure individual channels aren't blowing. I'm not sure if you can get a RGB histogram on your P&S, but if you can, make sure to check it specifically when you shoot reds/oranges. It's been my experience that they blow FAR easier than other channels and block things up. Just something to keep in mind. In any case, I think the close crop works well here given the positioning of the bird, and I don't mind the main branch in front of the bird, but the OOF one is a bit distracting. The leaves frame the bird nicely though, without cluttering things heavily.

Some Puzzle Macro outtakes, methinks?
The color is really nice in this, makes me wonder if it wasn't for your puzzle entry. To me, the color is such an integral part of it, it's hard to consider it without. The DoF is interesting on this too... doesn't quite seem to be how it should be, mentally.

Very nice Tome. I would have looked at trying to get the top ridgeline to exit at the very top right corner instead of just shy of it, or alternately placing the river exit at the bottom more to one side or the other. I also might have boosted the whites a little bit on it, but this is still very nice. I may be a bit spoiled and critical though, because I just went and saw the Ansel Adams Masterworks exhibit which is currently here in town :)

I really like this shot too, Tome. The shadows are what make it for me. It's got a nice degree of detail as well as blur from the movement, meaning that we can get a nice feel for the action, but also it still retains its identity well.

Wow... I didn't see this in voting. Exceptional shot. I am normally terrible at this sort of shooting, but really this is great in so many ways. The layout of the guns, his placement between them, and the exhibit identification number right on his cheek. It provides a nice commentary to things, including a human as an item within an expo of guns, especially with his deadpan expression.

Hello and greetings from the Critique Club-
I don’t feel as though your model is washed out, I think part of that feeling is just that she’s got a fair complexion and that, being in shadow, her front has very flat lighting on it. The serious look is interesting, but it fits very well with the landscape. I think your repetition of the color white in so many different aspects is interestingâ€Â¦ the mustache, the clothing, the snow, and it makes it a very cohesive presentation. I’m alright with the sky being blown, but wonder what this would look like if you had perhaps done it in BW. I would also encourage you to just go ahead and blow the whole sky uniformly and leave nothing left of it.
One thing that I think would have worked pretty well given your setting and overall feel, is to have her angled to the light somewhat, so that you can use the sun as a bit of a rimlight, because I really like the way her hair is caught by the light, but it̢۪s minimized in this shot because of the blown sky around her head. This would also give you a bit more edgy lighting on her face. Having her centered isn̢۪t going to be everybody̢۪s cup of tea, but it adds an intensity to things because there is nowhere else for the viewer to look, and I appreciate that.
