Thanks for the comments. At least you let me know "one" of the reasons why it was scoring low. This is a depression glass hobnail vase that belonged to my grandmother. I love how the backlighting made the inside of the vase visible and the flowers appear translucent. (Too subtle, I guess.)

I like the composition of your beautiful orchid. The strong background color works surprisingly well. I didn't vote on the touch challenge but if I did I would have given this a five. I think that the image could be improved by lightly using neat image or noiseware to smooth it out a bit. Also, I am not seeing a strong "touch" connection. As a flower shot (without the hand) it's very nice.

The bird portion of this photo is excellent. I gave it a four, though, because of the background. To me, and as usual I'm in the minority, it's obvious that you selected the bird and adjusted the background. The black edges are too sharp around the bird. If you put this up for a print, I'd suggest softening or blending the edges with the smudge tool or an equivalent technique.
I don't mean anything disrespectful to you. It's a great photo. I'm just explaining my lower vote.
