Nailed it! I think a touch more sun on the Washington monument would have helped, but it's not totally buried in shadows. I think you were dealing with the same cloudy day as the previous D.C. photo I voted on.

I'm afraid I will have to be a nitpicker on this one. Seems a bit soft through the whole image, and the capitol building is in shadows, no doubt from a cloud passing overhead. I'll bet a few minutes later you may have gotten the sun breaking through and hitting the capitol just right.

A very different approach, but perfectly suitable to the subject.

I think I have you beat in the tacky department. (No vote yet, just browsing)

Added: Ok voting now. I can't figure out why you might consider the Sydney Opera house to be tacky. Maybe it's a Cliche shot, but if I visited Sydney, I would certainly take my share of pics of this place. Not as over-photographed as Toronto, however. But then, I believe 40% of DPC members live in Toronto.

Interesting choice of treatment. I can see what you were trying to achieve with it, though I am divided as to whether it works for this scene. The real problem may be trying to show off this interesting treatment with only 720 pixels.

Just a great scene. Composition and crop leads my eye up to the mill quite nicely.

Seems a little oversharp, but that's appropriate for a postcard.

The lighting around that pier looks like bad haloing, but I do realize it is probably neon lights. Not sure I'm fond of the selective desat treatment, but I think that is a preference thing and you may get conflicting opinions on it.

If I had voted this challenge I probably would also have been dense and left a comment about the focus. The assumption is that someone is using a camera that is capable of decent focus, so it is taken as a flaw if you don't know different. I don't think any of my phone-cam shots from last years side challenge would do well in voting, but like this, they were interesting experiments.

It does have a cool fisheye swoopiness to it and pleasing colors. I'll bet it would have scored higher in abstract motion.

Some feedback, per your request in the forums. Your's did not come up for me in voting, btw.

Seems a little soft somehow. I'm not quite sure what it is. It does not appear focus was off, but its not sharp either. Looking at your shot info, I think it may have been the shutter speed of 1/25th second. Fast enough to not cause obvious blur, but just enough movement to dull the image a little. Was this handheld? Bumping up your ISO to 400 woudl have probably solved the problem. My Rebel XT does fairly well at 400, and I'm sure your D80 would perform even better at that setting. (My own FS entry was shot at ISO 200)

The other thing that struck me was the composition. The focal point that the eye is drawn to is the bridge, but it seems too centered top to bottom in the frame for my tastes.

Hope this helps to figure it out.
