At The Right Angleby pkanhereComment: JPEG Police here. Please open up. I have a warrant.
I noticed a slight fuzziness and a lack of detail to this photo and I think most of it is due to the use of excessive JPEG compression. Your file size of only 27k indicates a highly compressed image and that is what is robbing a lot of the detail and sharpness from this image. Check your compression settings when you save your file. Always adjust JPEG compression so that your file size is as large as possible, but within the challenge limit. (150k for this one). The compression artifacts are not glaringly obvious, though, and I expect I may be the only one to leave such a comment.
I also think the crop is a bit too centered. It is a nice close shot of a damsel fly, though and I expect the full size image has a lot more detail to it. |

the ramen shopby kolasiComment: I've never had ramen that came from anywhere but a Styrofoam container or a cellophane wrapper. I'll bet the real thing is much better. |

Baby Obamaby RooDysignComment: My in-challenge comment on this entry was more about trying to understand the message your entry was attempting to convey, than about the quality of the shot itself. I gave it a 4, which is what I give to something I feel is a good effort with major issues. I felt the overexposure was incidental and was not used in an effective manner that enhanced the image. It appears to be a shot that was backlit and happened to fit the challenge. I think this was a difficult challenge to do for everyone that entered. Hope this feedback was more helpful to you than my first comment.
Edited to add: BTW, The political statement had nothing at all to do with my vote. Message edited by author 2008-09-10 22:24:45. |

New Growthby ShazbutComment: I'm not caring for this, I'm afraid. two main issues, I think. The subject of the branch is positioned in such a way that my eye is not led to it, and it fights with the hills in the background for my attention. The other issue is the overall image seems a bit on the light side. Not overexposed in any way, just no visual "oomph" to it. Hope that makes some sense. I think perhaps a close, detail view of the new growth, with the shallow DOF being used to guide my eye to one part of it may have worked well.
I also noticed some compression artifacts (blocky pixellation) visible around the edges of soe of the leaves against the background. Your file size is only 91k is well under the max allowed and you could have eliinated the compression artifacts if you had used that remaining overhead. |

First Dayby renegrubComment: This is cute. You used the shallow DOF quite nicely to draw the eye to the subject. Kudos for nailing the theme dead-on. There appears to be a slight visible skew to me, though it could be an optical illusion. |

BLiND LiGHTby lpatrickComment: Hi, Louis! Your style is quite distinctive and easy to identify in a challenge. Not sure if this is overexposed or not. I suppose being an abstract it could be overexposed or even underexposed. Hmmm. You're making me think too hard. My interpretation is that this looks like a DPC-style oversaturated dusk shot. |
