The yellow filter did a lot to bring out shadow detail (it would seem -- I'm no expert). I also like the framing and that you showed us a lot of sky.

No! The contrast was perfect. You would have risked losing too much detail if you started fussing with levels or curves. In this case, the subject, the composition alone, delivers all the impact.

I meant to revise my comment before the challenge ended -- it was a bit harsh. I do love the composition, and I think the lines and shapes and fragmented nature of the composition were enough to hold the viewer's interest. I've seen worse applications of selective desat, but I think this would have held up nicely as a straight black and white, or with a very subtle, but uniform color scheme.

Well, I try to be honest -- the risk, of course, being that I might step on the toes of someone I really admire. Title and border aside, I do like this. The crop still feels a little tight to me, but there is definitely some intriguing energy between the people and whatever is on the hill. Given that -- and now that I think about it -- I can't come up with a better title.

My guess is this wouldn't have done as well. Negative image seems to work best when the viewer can't tell that it's negative. I think you made the right choice.
