Acid washby
MelethiaComment: This is quite stunning Deb - perfect crop and processing for the shot.
There is almost an unspoken elegance to the picture with the LB picking out the site that is the anchor point to the picture and provides us with all the detail we need to know. It almost like a visual jigsaw where the key piece has just dropped into place.
The explanation on the sign, and the wet sidewalk beneath it tie this up and explain to us what is happening objectively, while subjectively we then fill in the details of the street cleaner, fading out of focus - becoming one with the background ( as they are to so many people ) vague shapes of road and building, all of it ephemera, something to be noticed, but not dwelt on, as we are brought back again to the relationship between the sign, the sidewalk, and the booted foot of the cleaner. The this is made stronger by the fact that the guy is clearly caught in movement, while the sidewalk looks empty, he is busy doing his work adding a dynamic aspect to this, and the hose gives us a nice leading line drawing our eye across the picture element by element.
And as if that's not enough rambling - the acid wash is perfect to gently lift this scene out of the ordinary, which is an odd dichotomy in itself, as on one hand the whole strength of the picture is how you have captured something so very ordinary that we could so easily walk by - but it needs this extra lift, almost to force us to pause and realise how unique it is.
Anyway - I like it
