Wicked clarity and contrast! Cool way the dress is picked out and reflects - or seems to reflect - in the glass. Oof people there for us to make up stories about, possibly sinister but not impinging on the light and focus emanating from the subject.

I have spent some time looking and thinking about all 3 versions. I really just like them all because it is a really telling shot any whichway. The original is not blah - the sepia foreground tones are lovely and warm, and the green theme in the opposite windows serves to separate them from and avoid competing with the main foreground composition, and also provides a little information; on the other hand the bws look like classic war journalism - the first subtle, the second having a nice clarity. Definitely a Photo of the Year.

The eye, the look, and the rest just enough to tell us what we might need to know. Nice use of light and focal plane.

Wonderfully tactile presentation - just want to put my hand on his wrinkly head and have him look soulfully at me. And it seems no tones in this were wasted.

Very nice use of the available light, detailing the hair, and bits of the jacket, and of course the catchlight in the right eye. Letting the light do the painting.

Hmn. Guess I'm the only one unsure of the framing. I look at you, the subject, your gaze on the book, and beyond that the light lines on the floor leading ever so nicely to the corner. It is a great dynamic that would be brought out more effectively if the curtain rail, so nicely leveled and centred, were not there. So I guess I'm suggesting a crop -exactly how much I don't know. And now I can say I like this a lot, and the boots and e301's comment.

I've spent some time looking at this and the original. The bw conversion is good on most of the statue (I did like the moss though), but your haloing puzzles me because the head is already well defined in the original; as well there is I think a suitably muted feel in the original. (Possibly icons from the east are not in need of halo?)

This really slows us down! As if you just let this come to you, no sweat.

The lighting and lines move the viewer about this photo feeling the feel of the scene.

Sensuous. Frank Lloyd Wright meets Goya.
