I guess this was taken at the very limits of your cameras reach. I think you did right not to be tempted to crop in, as I don't think the detail is there to withstand it. Despite the bird being very small in the frame, it is shown in its environment, and the fact that you spotted and managed to snap a shy bird gains you a mark.

Some good detail in the heron, and crisp at the eye. Personally I would prefer a lttle more space for the bird to fly into.

Eye of the Sparrow

A tree sparrow rather than the more common house sparrow. These are becoming quite uncommon in large parts of the UK. Personally I would have preferred a full portrait rather than a partial one, especially given that here the light is quite harsh.

A little soft on the bird - I suspect that you focussed just a tad in front. Our robins are completely different to the American version!

The Eye

Lovely light, pleasingly balanced composition, and an interesting pose from your feathered model. As a niggle, it is a shame that the twigs have crept into the foreground as they do detract somewhat, but nonetheless, a good bird portrait.

It's a shame there is a shadow cutting across the bird's head - a different position may have eliminated it. I'm not hugely keen on the composition, I would prefer a bit more room for the bird to look into.
