River Tay Nightby GADriverComment: I like the shimmery nature of the lights. I am just not sure I like the placement of the horizon - I think if it were my photo, I would have dropped the horizon on center.
Regarding the question on the aperture and focus - the objects he is focused on are all at a similar focal plane (near infinity) so he is not going to be a problem especially using a wide angle set up as he did.
DOF calculators are a cool thing and can answer this question pretty quickly. The benefit of going to the 'middle' of the f-stop range for landscapes often has more to do with hitting the 'sweet spot' of lens where the images are sharpest. You want to close down the aperture if you want both objects very close to the camera and far away to be 'in focus'. In the case of the photo here, there is no close object to worry about.
A quick DOF calculation shows that if he was focused at objects more than 15 or 20 feet away at 18mm on his Canon T3 at f3.5, his near focus point would by about 8-10 feet and his far focus point would be infinite.

volleyballby mbrutus2009Comment: Some nice action shots in this set. But I would watch your white balance - these really are strongly on the yellow side. This is very typical in gymnasiums like this, so I would recommend adjusting your w/b setting to match the lighting (fluorescent) or bring a gray card so you can set it manually in the gym before the event. |

Subterraneanby NeilComment: the tilt, the diagonal lines leading across, the grain, the placement of the man - it is like an introductory chapter in some graphic novel about NYC |

PAW Week 4 - Pistachiosby pambComment: i really like your choice of DOE - the plane of focus really focuses us on the partially opened one |

PAW Week 2 - Boatby pambComment: a lovely location - i wonder if moving the horizon by getting up higher would add a bit more depth to the image by allowing the boat to 'breathe' a bit - but i like the choice of subtle hues |

Abandoned. Ignored.by NeilComment: The hustle and bustle is fantastic - especially how it is muted except for the carriage - maybe the lights at the top could be brought out a bit as they almost seem too muted. i think that bringing them out a bit might even strengthen the focus on the carriage.... |
