These are Serer storytellers of Senegal. Their bodies were placed in the hollow of a large Baobab tree (which is where they remain). Custom does not allow them to be buried in the ground because they were not farmers. The reasoning is that because they did not serve the Earth (as farmers) in life, the Earth would not serve them in death. I love this photo, but did not notice the yellow thing when I took it and could not effectively remove it with Aperture 2. I think the wires add an important element to the photo because it makes it appear that they were prisoners. I'll have to go back one of these days and re-shoot it without the yellow thing.
