The child's expression and body language are wonderful, and I like the lowkey light. Can't make up my mind about whether I'd like the dog in focus or not ... usually I would, but this way s/he seems more stoic somehow, and there's emotion hinted at between the dog and the photographer (who presumably can rescue the dog from the child's grasp with a word).

Have to admit, as a volunteer at the animal shelter I meet a LOT of people who really should have a pet like this! I'd find this shot a little more appealing with softer light, I think, like a more dreamy portrait.

Ears up and everything; nicely done! Not the most emotive image in the challenge to me, maybe because it is so technically perfect. And posed. Gotta' admit I have a bias for unscripted emotion between pets and people (and no, my profile pic is not my favorite shot of me and my dog ). But this is beautiful. And if I were that dog's person I'd be over the moon to have something like this to hang on my wall.

They do, and they snuggle, too. I rather like rats. I might like this better with a simpler or blurrier background and maybe softer light. Not really a harsh moment in my mind (since I've met some very nice rats over the years) so the light doesn't suit the mood I imagine.
