the idea is there, but the execution leaves something to be desired. the branches are very soft looking, and the lighting seems really flat. backlit subjects can make for some great contrasty images. I might have tried underexposing it a bit, then bumping the contrast using levels or curves. this is just my opinion, of course - it's all personal taste I guess, huh? :)

creativity points for sure (not enough of that in this challenge so far). image quality is great; nice focus and lighting, depth is spot on. cool camera too :). crop is a little tight for my taste, but i'm sure you looked at lots of options and decided this was best. One of the better BW conversions in the challenge. it's a PITA in basic editing in my opinion. well done.

hm. i commented on this already and it disappeared. I'll try again.

i look at this and think: "there's a picture of a sculpture". I'd like to see some of your own creative vision thrown into it. What do you like about it? is it the texture or the lines or the shadows? For me the surroundings look like they might make som nice contrasting lines, but the crop virtually eliminates them from the composition. When i take a photo i figure my job is to make the viewer see things *my* way. It's what differentiates the artist from the historian. just my opinion of course - if you don't share it, you're welcome to ignore me :)

to me, pgotography is primarily about light. this one could either use a little more or a little less, depending on what you're going for. I really like the backlighting idea using the firbeglass wall (a shed or barn I'd assume), but the cannisters seem like they need to either be brought out a bit, or completely silhouetted. A single spot light cast from the direction of your camera would help i think. if this weren't a basic challenge, you could dodge the cannisters a bit and just bring out the highlights a wee bit. This is just my opinnion of course - ignore it if this is the look you're going for :) 6 from me.

nice high key approach to an everyday subject. contrast and sharpness are decent, and despite the nature of metal, there aren't any really terribly blown out spots. nice work.

tough shot to nail in a basic editing challenge. the backlighting can be great, but you need something to get some light on her adorable little face, otherwise you end up over exposing (like this one) and lose valuable contrast. if it were advanced editing, you could have under exposed it some, and then dodged her face to bring it out of the shadows. before the fact, you likely could/should have used a reflector or fill flash and avoid the issue entirely. as it stands it's a great photo, that seems to need some contrast to make it less flat looking. if this was the look you were going for - ignore everything i said :)

beautful contrast. very difficult to do under these silly basic editing rules. you managed to get good sharpness and contrast without blowing out the highlights or losing detail in the shadows. well done.

great lighting. prolly a little sharp for Amber's liking :) that's a whole lot of skin detail available there...sometimes a little softness never hurt.

if this were an open challenge, I'd tell you to dodge her eyes a little so highlight them. obviously one of her strong points.

very nice capture of her expression. great shot.

that and RC Race cars are really cool. thank goodness i have a four year old and can justify playing with them
