Circle of Life by stfleckComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
As far as meeting the challenge is concerned, this one does, but it's not extremely original. There were several images with a similar subject, so you may have been dinged on your score due to lack of originality.
The composition is OK, although the background is quite busy. You may have been able to isolate the flowers a bit better by opening up the aperture thus blurring the background a bit better. It would also have allowed you to use a faster shutter speed which should have given you a sharper image.
Technicals. The lighting appears to be a bit flat leaving the image a little bit dull. You could possibly have boosted this a bit in post processing. Speaking of post processing to my eye the image seems to be a little bit over sharp. Could just be my eyes, but...

The Alley Out Backby surlybiffComment: Greetings from the Critique Club.
I received your image to critique from the Critique Club queue. I have already commented on this image, but that was more by way of response to a comment you posted in the forum than a general review of the image.
First Impression:Seems to be a little bit of a shoehorn as far as the challenge topic is concerned. Whilst I do get that it is shot from above, it doesn't really give me the feeling of that.
Composition: Tilted images are always a challenge. In this case it looks like a mistake rather than an artistic choice. Additionally, as has been stated earlier, there is really no subject in this image.
Overall, I think you have received quite a lot of feedback on this image already, so hopefully you have an idea already why it didn't score very high.

First Impression: Creative take on this username. I like the idea very much, although it possibly falls into the "water drop" category.
Composition: The composition works well, although possibly I would like to have seen more background to give a bit more context.
Technical: Here I think there is some room for improvement (when considering a higher score on DPC). I expect unless you had a whole cupboard full of cups that you were prepared to break into smithereens, that you didn't have too many chances to get this bang on the money! For me the lighting seems very flat and makes the image quite dull. I'm not sure how you could overcome that without blowing the highlights in the cup. (I'm not that technically competent that I can offer solutions). I do think this is the main reason why it only scored mid-5.
Overall I like the image, it's a good subject for this challenge and with some improvements in lighting/processing I think it could have scored higher. It did not realise it's potential.

beachdogby rinacComment: Rina, maybe you are starting a trend here on DPC? :) I know you got your share of 1,2 and 3 votes, but you got as many 10s as 1s and that has to be good thing. Look at the commenters score too :) Great stuff and should in my not so humble opinion have scored much higher. Would have been a 10 from me if I could have voted. |
