looks like a half-hearted attempt at replicating a shot from Window view, wth a guy with a knife peering in through a torn windowscreen. Check out that shot and see why it's so effective.

I wish I knew what the title was in relation to. Is it to the goat/lion/eagle hybrid monster of mythology? The name of the tug/fishing vessel? Also shot is very dark and looks oof.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

*scratching head* compression artifacts? Where, Spiffy? *ahem* now on with the critique...

Initial impression: Very simple, powerful image. Less is more and it definitely works here. I voted quickly, which is probably why I only gave it a 6. Now, looking at it more, it warrants a 7.

Technical: Great setting, great thirds, nice murky image which offsets the flat blackness of the bulk of the figure...as has been noted already, as though a human has been cut out of the image. Deliberate or not, it works very well. Surprised at your settings - very shallow DOF, very high ISO and shutter speed. But it works.

Artistic: The note in hand makes me wonder if it is a summons of sorts. Wow, there really is a Loch Lomond?! I thought it was just a fictitous brand of whisky drunk by Captain Haddock in the Tintin series :-) And yes, the effective negative space does draw the eye to the person. Didn't even notice the not-perfectly level horizon until it was pointed out, which may help add to an unsettling feel.

Overall: Very well done image, quiet but menacing at the same time. What will the note tell the person to do?

Feel free to PM me with any questions,

Susan

Greetings from the Critique Club!

Initial impression: Basically a really promising shot, but the lack of tones is probably why I voted this a 6 during voting.

Technical: Good use of dof and thirds; like the overhang of the tree leading you to the circle. Have to admit though the image as is leaves me feeling a little flat, like there is more going on that we are missing.

Artistic: Given such an ancient and yes, likely pagan symbol, I would have liked to see a more dramatic presentation of same. Perhaps imagine yourself as a fearful peasant from yonks ago, stumbling across this image as the light fell...you may have fallen to your knees in worship/fear/both!

Overall/FWIW: If only for fun, and if feasible (the UK is a small enough island), try shooting this scene again from different heights. I probably would've been on my back or tummy, as I tend to like shooting extreme POV.

Having said that, you finished quite well, so keep shooting and good luck!

Feel free to PM me with any questions,

Susan
