Uhm, a snowfall in South Korea? Wow. I gave this a 5 during voting, because technically it is an OK shot, but not outstanding. Like that you chose to go with a low ISO and high shutter speed. If you'd had a tripod with you, you could have slowed the shutter way down and shot to get much more dof.
The hanger in the middle of the shot could have been removed, as there are already a lot of things to look at - the juice pour, the broken glass, the chain, the patch/tape, and the fittings on the machine. Find my eye roams over the picture a little too much, there should be one element that demands attention. Look at the winners of any challenge here, they are usually incredibly simple in terms of composition. Less is more!
Hope this critiqur helps, keep shooting!

One of the first things you learn about DPC is, this site is loaded with literalists. They want to see something that very obviously fits the challenge. Here the broken leg needs to be looked for, and that sadly is too much work for some.
Some commenters feel the model detracts...I wouldn't say she necessarily detracts from the shot. However, does she add to it either? In my opinion, no. The look on her face is not one of alarm, just slightly mild concern.
Technically, the WB does look to be a bit off, can be tough to get esp if you are taking a reading off the wall behind her. My house is also painted in some unusual colours, so I've learned to compensate accordingly. Composition is OK, I might have cropped the top a bit. FWIW I'd have gone for more dof, less ISO, faster shutter.
Overall it isn't a bad shot, you just need to make things a little more obvious, especially in challenges like this. I also got a thorough spanking from the voters for my entry in this challenge, thinking that they would 'get it.' Well, they didn't!
Meanwhile, keep shooting and entering challenges, that's the best way to learn. Remember, Charles Edison finally succeeded in inventing the incandescent light bulb...after failing 2000 times previous.

Mr McGrump made me LOL enough to frighten my cats, so that's an automatic 8 :-) Love the attention to detail and thanks for telling us what you used to create him. Great cartoony expression, lighting is wonderful, comp not outstanding but the expression gets the point across loud and clear.
Wondering why such a high ISO for a studio shot...but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have a Sigma 10-20mm too and love that lens. Can see why you did so well, congrats and more importantly, keep shooting!

| 01/25/2010 09:39:22 PM | sometimes we get to see what we've lostby posthumousComment: Greetings from the Critique Club, Don!
Ooh, I see him, I see him! I also see where and why some would like to see the bottom third and left third cropped. Would work, from a technical standpoint, but would also take the posthumous-ness from the shot. And that would never do.
The lighting and glare is a teeny bit strong but also helps to illuminate the face. Can't argue with the settings, though someone I know would say to put the camera on a tripod, stop waayyyyy down and shoot for 30 seconds or some such tomfoolery :-) The bar is a little distracting but honestly, I only noticed it cause others mentioned it. Composition daring as he is almost leaning out of frame, but makes the shot all the more interesting imho.
Artistically, a lovely and fun piece of work and very well done, lighting up the angles and planes of the face and catching a hunched-over, studious pose. Not sure if I see him peering into his childhood per se, but I see him peering into something and boy does he look pissed!
Great work, you really do deserve a posty blue for this.
