No fear, I've been in your shoes. I'll be gentle. :-)
I gave this shot a 6 during voting, because I felt that the try was there, if you get my meaning. Signature Style was a pretty tough challenge, even moreso for a noob. But I felt that you took a deep breath and jumped in anyway, so congrats on that!
Shot is well-lit, very simple and clean. Composition is good but not outstanding. I don't see a lot of the HDR, which is good - and by all means listen to Bear, he knows his stuff. Hard to say how to improve artistically, taking into account the nature of the challenge and your newness to the site.
But you're definitely on the right path. Keep shooting! Look forward to seeing more of your work.
Feel free to PM me with any questions.

Ahh, woodies, gotta love them. The pun goes over especially well here, as certain lunatics umm, members are known for both their liberal use of woodies and fire.
The shot itself is well focused and lit with what lights you have (not unlike mine :-) The settings for the shot are good, and you didn't overdo the pp. The details, the fireman's outfit and axe, are all great.
However, the image is a bit static, you need to tell more of a story here. SOmtimes it's a tossup - use a studio setting and have complete control over everything, or take your chances and woodie/camera to a location where you may have to put up with inconsistent lighting, but end up with a more colourful and creative shot.
All in all, a good effort and you finished well, so keep on shooting and have fun! Look forward to seeing more of your entries.

First of all, you were shooting a documentary, may have been on set, so may not have been able to leave your location. Having said that, I can see why so many commenters seem ambivalent this shot. It does have a bit of a touristy-snapshot feel to it. Everyone is simply too far away to draw us in, all we see are straining figures hauling on a rope. The POV is very safe. Surely if this were a daily occurence at roughly the same time each day, you may have been able to get a more dynamic angle.
Camera settings seem fine, composition bland though some attempt at rule of thirds. A few very minor nitpicks...some visible sensor dust in upper left corner, and fishing buouys, also detract to a slight but noticable extent. A lot of cropping could have been done to tighten the shot. Yes, documentaries and many movies are shot with such a long shot to give a sense of place....but then they generally zoom in on the action pretty fast to keep the audience engaged.
So that's what I suggest you keep in mind for now. Get the action!
Feel free to PM me with any questions,
Susan
