Shots like these need to be well executed as they are in a controlled environment where you have full control. This is not the case with this pic. It's underexposed which has resulted in the grain and it looks soft which shots like these must not be. Take time and make sure you get the best possible exposure - You probably needed some extra light to light up the chalice so that the exposure of the flame would not burn out and would then match up evenly.
