Northumbrian Dawnby
FalcComment: Thanks for all the comment everyone, glad you liked the image.
Just to give you a little background I planned to go away that weekend with the family, but as soon as the challenge was set I knew we had to go to the beach.
I checked Tide Tables and Sunrise times to give me a narrower choice of locations. It came down to Northumberland for dawn shots or Cumbria for Sunset. Northumberland it was.
So we packed up the kids and set off on the Friday night, drove 3hrs north and checked into teh hotel. At 3:00am I was up again and heading down to the beach ready for dawn. Only to be met by 15 other photographers all pointing cameras at Bamburgh Castle (my first choice).
Quickly looking round I opted for the lighthouse, which everyone else was ignoring.
I set the tripod up on an exposed rock and waited for dawn. The incoming tide got closer and closer, then started to lap around the bottom of the tripod. Still no sunrise. By the time I took the shot the water was 9 inches up the tripod legs and almost upto my knees. The North Sea is COLD ;-)
Used several cokin P ND filters and 2 ND grads to get the long exposure for the sea, whilst maintaing the correct sky exposure. Oh then I dropped the cable release into the Sea too.
All in all an expensive image, but worth every penny.
